Greek Christmas and New Year’s Wishes

Just like in many other countries, sharing holiday wishes is an important part of Christmas and New Year’s celebrations in Greece. These greetings are an expression of love, care, and warmth that bring people closer together during this special time of year. If you have Greek friends or acquaintances, surprising them with heartfelt wishes in their native language is a wonderful gesture - they’ll definitely appreciate it.

Below you’ll find 21 examples of Greek holiday wishes, divided into three categories: Christmas wishes (χριστουγεννιάτικες ευχές), New Year’s wishes (ευχές για Πρωτοχρονιά), and general holiday wishes. You can use them in conversations, messages, or on holiday cards.

If you’d like to learn proper pronunciation, pay attention to the Greek accent mark - the tonos (τόνος). It appears above one of the vowels and indicates which syllable should be stressed. Accent placement in Greek is extremely important; using it incorrectly (or not at all) can change the meaning of the word or make it difficult to understand. Here are a few examples:

  • Καλά Χριστούγεννα (Kalá Christoúgenna) - “Merry Christmas”; the accent falls on the second syllable of “Καλά” and the second syllable of “Χριστούγεννα.”

  • Χρόνια Πολλά (Chrónia Pollá) - “Many happy returns/Best wishes”; the accents fall on the first syllable of “Χρόνια” and the last syllable of “Πολλά.”
